Agave Ghiesbreghtii
Agave Purposorum, Agave Huehueteca
ghiesbreghtii

Description.

Clump forming, spread up to 4m. Leaves broad lanceolate, ovate or deltoid, 30 to 40 cm long 7 to 10 cm wide, narrowed above base and widest in middle, sometimes linear thick, rigid, straight or upcurving, dark green to light green, convex below, plane to slightly hollowed or guttered above, the acuminate apex with reduced teeth; corneous margin relatively narrow, brown; teeth moderate, the larger 5 to 8 mm long, 1 to 3 mm apart, frequently straight, sometimes curved upward or downward, brown to grayish spine 2-4 cm long, subulate, brown to gray, shortly shallowly grooved above, rounded below.

Its natural habitat is Tropical arid to semi arid, dry lava/rock outcrops on the South-facing slope of Sierra Cuchumatanes. The more moist Guatemalan climate appears to favour larger size. The suckering clones of A. ghiesbreghtii rarely flower.

Agave ghiesbreghtii is closely related to A. kerchovei, and is distinguished by its shorter broader leaves with closer smaller teeth on narrower darker comeous margins. Some of the small-leaved forms may not be separable at sight from A. horrida and A. obscura, but the latter are usually separable by their larger, more closely spaced teeth which continue nearly to the base of the spine and by the flat ungrooved base of the spine.
